If you don't know how to arrange furniture in your living room the right way, you will go down the road of disappointment.
The one thing that no one tells you is that trying to visualize a room full of furniture will end with a disaster every time.
No one can visualize the exact amount of space that furniture will consume in a room.
If you have a floor plan before you get started you will know in advance exactly where your furniture will go.
You may only need to move around just a few pieces and you may think that you can do that without a plan. However, moving even small pieces that seem simple can become very complicated quickly. I've got a few tips to help you arrange your furniture in your living room.
How to arrange furniture in your living room tip #1 think about what you use the space for.
Get your family members involved helping out with the room. Ask each family member what they like to use the room for and what their needs are for space. Do Not assume that you know everyone's needs are. By getting all the members of the room involved you will get the most use out of your space.
How to arrange furniture in your living room tip #2 start your living room layout with the sofa
The living room sofa is usually one of the largest items in the room and demands attention. Choose to place your sofa on a large or long wall. This will give you plenty of room around the sofa in which to build upon. Think of it as the stage setting the stage for the rest of the room.
How to arrange furniture in your living room tip #3 deal with the TV
Yes, we all have the black rectangle that hangs on the wall, sits on the entertainment center, or is above the mantel. Make sure that you place your tv at the proper distance from the sofa. Too close or too far way can make for uncomfortable viewing. Leave a minimum distance of 7' to the tv. The same is true if it is too high or too low, as this can cause uncomfortable neck positions.
How to arrange furniture in your living room tip #4 keep traffic flows open
Keep in mind that traffic must flow in, out and around the room easily. Try not to overlap the edges of furniture arm pieces this can block viewing and causes uncomfortable conversation areas. Leave at least 18" between a sofa and coffee table.
How to arrange furniture in your living room tip #5 consider the scale of the pieces
Having your floor plan ready in advance will ensure that your furniture will fit inside the room. The furniture should be proportional to the size of the room. If furniture is too large space can feel cramped versus if it is too small your room may look unfinished or bare.
How to arrange furniture in your living room tip #6 arrange for conversations
Arrange your furniture so that the pieces are facing one another or at a slight angle. This will allow guests to face on another and will bring comfort. as well make for a better conversation area. The position of the furniture will bring about unity in the space. Define the area by the use of an area rug.
How to arrange furniture in your living room tip #7 use symmetry
Try to visualize your room on each wall in 3 sections. Use symmetry across the room to line up items in your room into the 3 sections. The division into three areas will create more interest and avoid a split or a divide in the room. This will allow the room to flow more evenly from one area to another giving the room a sense of balance.
That's it. This is how you arrange your furniture in your living room the right way.
