Biggest Accessories Mistake You Can Easily Avoid
Each room in our home is like a vignette in 3 dimensional form. The walls are the backdrop for the room. Furniture is added to create depth, and is placed to direct the eye around the room. Finally, is the finishing touch layer with accessories. This is where we can get in to trouble as accessories can be a bit tricky. Here I will go over some of the biggest accessories mistake you can easily avoid.
#1 Biggest accessories mistake you can easily avoid is plan the area in advance.
Evaluate each wall and make sure you know which wall will be the dominate wall. Each room should only have one dominate area. This area is usually the first wall that you see when you walk into the room. Many times your largest or most dominate furniture piece will go on this wall. This dominate piece could be a bed, or maybe a sofa. Use the dominate (motif) accessory above your furniture. This will drive your eye straight to this area.
#2 Biggest accessories mistake you can easily avoid is make sure you dominate motif is dominating.
To choose the perfect accessory to be the dominate motif it needs make a statement in the room. This can be created by making sure the item stands out in the area. Try to increase the size of the item and fill the space. Choose an item that is brighter in color or has texture. By using items that are unusual or draw lots of attention you will easily draw attention to the area.
#3 Biggest accessories mistake you can easily avoid is make sure you vary the sizes of accessories.
Avoid using lots of items that are all of the same size. By using items that are of different sizes you will add more interest. If you have a lot of items that are all of the same size, try stacking items. Such as use an accessory of the same size and place a book under one of the items to give it a different height. This will create an optical illusion of the item being taller.
#4 Biggest accessories mistake you can easily avoid is to make sure that you weight your items down.
You should never hang items on the wall without considering what is under it. When you take a picture and hang it high on a wall it gives it a look of just floating in space. Each piece needs to have something to ground it. To create this effect, place a larger piece of furniture or another heavier accessory under your accessory to create a feel of weight. In hallways this can be tricky as there is usually no furniture in the area. Try using a chair rail or floating shelves to give a more weighted feel.
#5 Biggest accessories mistake you can easily avoid is make sure your items are colorful and bright.
The smaller an accessory is the harder it can become to see in the room. The smaller an item is the brighter it can become. The brighter color will add a pop of color as well make the smaller items become a bolder statement.
Once you realize some of the mistakes that you might have made with your accessories you can begin to make some changes. To avoid having to go out and by new items try using what you already have and mix it up. Move the accessories you have around in your home. You may discover that and items you have in a bedroom may look better in a living room.
